Welcome to the Journal

Hello — if you’re reading this, I’m glad that you’re here.

“Writing more” has been one of many vague goals floating around my head for the better part of 2020 and 2021. To be specific, finally sharing those pages upon pages of thoughts that I've accumulated in the form of a public journal. I’ve always found comfort and clarity in writing — it’s one of the most effective ways for me to process things that I’m working through and make sense of my jumbled thoughts.

There’s a vulnerability in publicly sharing words and thoughts, and a very different sort of vulnerability in sharing jewelry that I’ve made by hand and poured hours of work into. Neither is always easy, and both are personal. There’s something about the act of writing that brings me deeper into myself — not in a myopic sense, but in a way that gives my thoughts and feelings clearer definition.

I heard a phrase for the first time some months ago that really struck me: Esse Quam Videri, which means “to be, rather than to seem.” This kind of captures the essence of my personal growth over the last couple of years in particular, and one of the biggest ways in which writing has helped me through the journey of that growth. To me, Esse Quam Videri means self examination and awareness, turning the mirror inward, and focusing on internal progress rather than external validation.

(And yes, I know it’s also the state motto for North Carolina. My personal growth has had nothing to do with North Carolina — no offense to my NC friends 😉)

The impetus for these writings comes from a desire to cultivate connections with other creatives, share more openly about common struggles faced by many of us, and continue to learn and reflect on my own creative process and impulses. I’ll be writing about big, complex topics like authentic branding, finding an audience, niching down, competition in the creative world, and inspiration vs. imitation, but I’ll also share resources, tips and tricks for common scenarios we find ourselves in as makers, and actionable advice — as well as Elysian-Theory-specific things like in-depth looks at the inspiration behind collections, spotlights on other makers and collaborations, and personal reflections.

I’m so excited to finally start sharing these writings with you! Thanks for reading — more soon.
